In fact the text block of Ulysses is about 7% thicker than the Wake (48mm to 45mm), so it follows that Ulysses is on much thinner paper. Ulysses is much the longer book - about 42% more pages - yet the books look of similar size on the shelf. Niceness is not quite the point when it comes to these two Joyce books. Wove is used for top-end books too, to good effect: the Poetic Edda and Travels in Arabia Deserta are examples of well-regarded LEs on Wove. You may have the impression that the Pure is the nicer paper simply because the Wove is so versatile that it has been used by the FS for a high proportion of its output in recent years, including many of its standard editions, and is perhaps all too familiar. I agree entirely with Antonio ( >2 drasvola:) that these are both high quality papers, from a top Swedish mill.
